This is a brooch of opposites, representing animals that fly through air and through water. The eagle ray representation is the side of this brooch that is seen, and the underside has been lavished with the same attention to detail, featuring the bas-relief image of an eagle, which grasps a snake in one claw and a crystal in the other, representing the struggle between good and evil. Eagle and snake motifs are widespread throughout world mythology, and appear on European coats of arms, in Babylonian mythology, Chinese legend and in the founding of great cities and countries. The themes of duality and the notion of the chimera have been explored in the myths of many societies and still remain a powerful symbol within modern visual culture. The brooch attaches by way of a pin and clasp fastening.
