Eagle Ray

The eagle ray is a close relative of the sting ray and manta ray. It has distinctive markings on its back which were the inspiration for this small group of jewellery. The surfaces are set with dozens of small cabochon stones to represent the natural texture of the ray's skin, known as shagreen.

This is a brooch of opposites, representing animals that fly through air and through water. On the reverse side is the bas-relief image of an eagle. The eagle is grasping a snake in one claw and a crystal in the other representing the struggle between good and evil. Eagle and snake motifs are widespread throughout world mythology. They appear on European coats of arms, in Babylonian mythology, Chinese legend and in the founding of great cities and countries. The themes of duality and the notion of the chimera have been explored in the myths of many societies and still remain a powerful symbol within modern visual culture.
